Cron, Kalka take week honors; Matis maintains hold on 1st place

MEDINA – Jeff Cron and Andrew Kalka took top honors winning 12 points apiece for the week as the league faced a challenging Pleasant Valley Country Club in 2026 GC3 regular season play. Wet course conditions and cart-path only play had many golfers on their heals. Kalka finished with a low gross score of 54 earning one par on the Par 3 164-yard #7 hole. Mike Matis won 11 match play points to continue his early season lead. Matis, Kalka, Mike Zenczak, and Cron sit in the top four positions each having earned over 20 points on the season. Play resumes next week at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

Matis birdies #5, takes early lead in GC3 2026 opener

COLUMBIA STATION – After a brief rain delay, 2026 GC3 regular season play got underway at Royal Crest Golf Course. Mike Matis captured the early season lead earning 17 points on the night. Matis had not only a great match play victory, but shot a birdie on the par 3 153-yard number 5 hole, dropping his tee shot 3 feet from the cup and sinking the putt. Mike Zenczak took the second spot on the leader board winning 15 match play points with a low gross score of 43, and Andrew Kalka placed third with 13 points. Adam Gilbert and Jeff Marfinetz stand at 11 match play points each to conclude the double digit winners. Jeff Cron (47) and John Walsh (49) rounded out the top three low gross scores for the week. Play resumes next week at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

Final handicap round, Walsh sets new gross record

COLUMBIA STATION – Handicap play concluded on week 3 of the 2026 GC3 Cleveland Golf League at Royal Crest. John Walsh set the pace of play turning in a round of 42 and setting a new GC3 course league record on the front side of Royal Crest. John’s solid round featured him earning par of three of the final 5 holes. Three pars also ties the record for league play for Royal Crest 1-9. Mike Zenczak shot a 2-par round of 44. Adam Gilbert notched 2 pars with a round of 45 and John Zenczak shot 49 with a lone par on hole #2.

The regular season kicks off at Royal Crest next Monday.

Cold temps the story for week 2 at Cossett Creek

BRUNSWICK – Falling from high temps the previous week, a thin crew of 8 GC3 golfers braved the cold in week 2 action of the 2026 GC3 Cleveland Golf League at Cossett Creek. Bernie Willoughby lead the field shooting 50 recording 2 pars on holes 1 and 2. Mike Zenczak matched Bernie with a round of 50 with a lone par on #4. Mike Donato notched 2 pars with a round of 58. Andrew Kalka turned in his best round with 56.

Final handicap round at Royal Crest next Monday.

Golfers Start Season With Handicap Round At Cossett Creek

BRUNSWICK – With temperatures reaching 80 degrees, members of the GC3 Cleveland Golf League kicked off the 2026 early season with a handicap round of play at Cossett Creek. John Walsh turned in a low score of 47 (with 1 par) on the front nine. Mike Zenczak turned in a 48 with 3 pars, and Bernie Willoughby shot 50 recording 2 pars on holes 2 and 3. Adam Gilbert, Mike Matis, and Jeff Marfinetz each notched a par score on this opening week of play.

Handicap qualifying play returns next week to Cossett.
